在2019年底的一次教堂仪式上，这位95岁的老人说，当他在2015年得知自己患有癌症，而且已经扩散到大脑时，他以为自己“会很快死去”。
“我显然为此祈祷过。我没有请求上帝让我活着，但我请求上帝给我一个正确的态度对待死亡。据美国有线电视新闻网报道，卡特在2019年说:“我坦然面对死亡。”
他补充说:“我是死是活对我来说并不重要。只是我会想念我的家人，想念在卡特中心的工作，有时想念在主日学校教礼拜，等等。所有这些令人愉快的事情。”
这位美国第39任总统在接受实验性治疗后，仅四个月就摆脱了癌症，并继续为仁人家园和卡特中心工作。
卡特在90多岁时仍然定期在他家乡乔治亚州普莱恩斯的马拉纳塔浸信会教堂的主日学校演讲和授课。
2023年2月18日，卡特中心发表声明说，现年98岁的卡特在“一系列短期住院”后选择停止接受医疗干预，并接受临终关怀，“他的家人和医疗团队全力支持”。
他和他95岁的妻子罗莎琳还保持着结婚时间最长的总统夫妇的记录。他们一起在普莱恩斯长大，罗莎琳的妹妹甚至以吉米的母亲莉莲的名字命名。
近年来，卡特的健康状况开始下降，包括2019年在家中两次摔倒受伤。第一次摔倒时，他的前额缝了针，但第二天他就回到了为仁人家园建造房屋的工作中。据CNN报道，第二次摔得更严重，骨盆轻微骨折。
