据悉，马斯克已经会见了土地所有者和房地产经纪人，详细介绍了他的愿景，即在科罗拉多河沿岸建立一个“得克萨斯乌托邦”，供他的员工居住。
“蜗牛溪”将位于奥斯汀外约35英里处，靠近Boring和SpaceX公司。据报道，Boring公司高管正在考虑将未来的城镇纳入巴斯特罗普县，以保留为自己的市政制定法规的能力。在去年的一次全公司会议上，Boring总裁史蒂夫·戴维斯建议举行选举，决定谁将成为该市市长。
马斯克计划在“蜗牛溪”提供远低于该地区市场价格的租赁住房。举例来说，在巴斯特罗普县，一套两居室或三居室的房子平均租金为2200美元，而在“蜗牛溪”，同样布局的房子的租金给800美元左右。然而，如果“蜗牛溪”的居民被解雇或辞职，他们只有30天的时间来腾出他们所住的房子。“蜗牛溪”已经有了几个模块化住宅和设施，如室外健身房、游泳池、网球场和一个写着”欢迎光临德克萨斯斯内尔布鲁克”的标志。
根据规划，马斯克将建造约110套住房，但他似乎还有空地建造更多的房子，因为他在过去三年里购买了至少3500英亩的土地，并能够控制奥斯汀附近地区多达6000英亩的土地。
公司建镇并不是什么新鲜事，根据史密森尼学会的说法，在整个19世纪，随着煤炭、钢铁和纺织工业的发展，无数公司建造了城镇。据报道，公司将要求他们的员工住在城镇的基本住房中，并将他们的孩子送到公司的学校，课程由公司高层制定。
如果马斯克的“蜗牛溪”计划得以实现，他不会是唯一一个在得克萨斯州拥有一座城镇的亿万富翁高管。2021年，也就是马斯克从加州搬到得克萨斯州的同一年，达拉斯小牛队老板马克·库班买下了野马镇。不过，“蜗牛溪”让总共只有77英亩的野马镇相形见绌。
