然而，严重事故的风险几乎已经使核电站的建设在美国停滞不前。根据能源信息管理局的数据，自2000年以来，只有一座美国核电站开始运营，美国核电站的平均寿命约为40年。
Natrium电站旨在解决核能所面临的最大问题。盖茨指出，Natrium电站与传统核电站的最大区别在于它使用液态钠来冷却反应堆。与传统冷却剂水不同，液态钠可以在不增加压力的情况下吸收更多的反应堆热量，降低爆炸风险。即使电站失去电力，它也可以继续冷却。
该计划还有一个独特的储能系统，将使其更易于与电网集成。对超级计算机的广泛测试表明，Natrium电站可以承受各种模拟灾害。
盖茨预计，Natrium电站的建设将为怀俄明州肯默尔地区带来约1600名工人，为当地经济提供几年的重要推动，并将雇佣200-250人。一家即将关闭的当地煤电厂雇佣了110名当地居民。
