自从他于二月份宣布决定入住临终关怀中以来，卡特的孙辈们偶尔会提供关于他的更新。他24岁的孙子雨果·温策尔（Hugo Wentzel）本月早些时候告诉《人物》杂志，他们现在专注于照顾他并表达他们的爱。
“我和他一起度过了美好的生活，”温策尔表示，“他是一位了不起的爷爷。他是一个了不起的人。我非常爱他。”
