干旱造成损失和损害
由于广泛干旱影响了2022年的农业季节，西非农民的作物和生计遭受损失和损害。这对整个地区产生了连锁反应，粮食供应因此减少，价格飙升。气候保险使社区能够从损失和损害中恢复，防止人们陷入饥饿。
该保险计划是非洲抗风险能力机构的一部分，非洲抗风险能力机构是非洲联盟的专门机构，帮助各成员国管理气候和灾害风险。利用收到的保险赔付，粮食署将分别向布基纳法索支付720万美元、冈比亚18.76万美元、马里800万美元。粮食署还将为6至23个月的儿童以及孕妇和哺乳期妇女提供营养支持。
480万人从气候保险中收益
粮食署气候风险保险负责人迪布勒伊（Mathieu Dubreuil）说：“在德国、英国和美国的支持下，粮食署已经购买了保险，得以与地方政府合作，最大限度地减少气候影响造成的损失和损害。我们需要扩大此类举措，从而保护更多生活在气候危机第一线的人。”
自2019年以来，通过非洲抗风险能力机构的保险计划，粮食署向6个非洲国家共480万人提供了援助。迄今为止，粮食署已获得针对5个国家灾害赔付的8笔共计2540万美元金额，为79万多人提供了现金和粮食援助、营养支持和紧急资产创造。
来自马里的丧偶妇女艾塞（Aissé）在2021年收到了干旱赔付。她说：“在我没钱购买食物的时候，我收到了现金资助。我和孩子们独自生活，我们需要吃饭。所以，我买了大米和小米。”
