　　王猛以世界青年科学家峰会执行秘书长的身份参加了9月16日至17日在联合国总部以及纽约市举办的相关活动。他在一场会议上发言说，人类正面临严峻的生存挑战，因此必须坚持“以科学为驱动”，构建应对挑战的系统性解决方案，并倡导加强科学教育，建立全球青年合作与互信，加速实现可持续发展目标。

　　谈及推动可持续发展的具体解决方案，王猛表示：“由于发展阶段和模式不同，很难制定实现全球可持续发展的‘统一方案’。我们需要更多拥有共同愿景但有区别的区域性行动计划，积极践行全球发展倡议。”

　　咸海位于中亚地区，曾是世界第四大湖，受气候变化和人类对水资源不合理利用影响，近60年里面积急剧萎缩超过90%，已濒临干涸，由此导致的一系列生态和公共健康问题严重影响了中亚国家人民生产、生活和经济的可持续发展。中亚地区的生态安全已成为中亚国家及国际社会的重大关切。

　　王猛所在的中国科学院新疆生态与地理研究所，多年来围绕咸海流域生态治理在中亚地区开展了大量研究工作，同时紧密联合中亚地区10多个研究机构，提出一系列有关咸海生态治理的科学计划，包括发起“中亚区域绿色科技发展行动计划”。

　　“这些工作和计划获得了中亚地区各国及国际同行的高度支持和响应，为咸海生态治理提供科学的解决方案，也得到联合国相关部门的高度关注。”王猛说。

　　在17日联合国秘书长青年特使办公室举办的高级别青年交流会中，联合国秘书长青年特使贾亚特玛·维克拉马纳亚克高度评价王猛关于用科学促进可持续发展的设想以及所取得的成果。
